The Effect of Toxins

The Effect of Toxins

Lets start with the basics. A toxin is a poison produced by a living organism, like a snake or spider. A toxicant is a man-made substance, like a pesticide or medication. These toxicants build up creating the body burden. We measure this burden with the total toxic load- the amount of chemicals we are exposed to. Kinda heavy right?

So, how are we exposed to all these toxins/toxicants? Good question. Would you believe the food you eat and the water you drink are big sources? Contaminated water and chemicals in your food. We also inhale chemicals, such as pesticides and air pollution. Topical exposure is important too. Soap, shampoo, conditioner, make-up & cleaning products to name a few. Seems a little overwhelming with so many pathways for exposure.

Now, the big question. What can we do to limit our exposure? Another great question. We can start by buying organic fruits and vegetables, especially the dirty dozen: Strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, kale, cherries, peaches, nectarines, celery, apples, apricots, green beans, grapes & cucumbers. Shop the periphery of the grocery store. Avoid processed, boxed and canned items. Read labels. The more ingredients, the more chemicals it contains. If you don’t know what the ingredient is, it’s not natural. For pest control, use a company that specializes in non-toxic treatments. Use cleaning products that are environmentally friendly or make your own. 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 water makes an excellent glass and all purpose cleaner. Use personal care products that are natural. Again, read labels.

Your biggest defense against toxins/toxicants is you! Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Fruits and vegetables are your friend. Eat a variety and all the colors of the rainbow. Phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins & minerals play a vital role in protecting your body. Limit alcohol and caffeine. Stop smoking. Exercise regularly, reduce stress & reduce the use of plastic.

Awareness is the first step in reducing your exposure to chemicals and improving your overall health. Focus on one item at a time. Start with food. Buy organic when possible and read labels. Aim for buying 7 different colors of fruits and vegetables each week. We all want to feel better and reduce our toxic burden. Lets take action to begin living our best lives.
