New Year New You
Every year, resolutions are made, diets are started, and gyms are packed. These good intentions usually last around two weeks and then it’s back to the drawing board. After all, we are creatures of habit.
Starting new things is intimidating. Going to the gym unsure of how to use the equipment can feel awkward. Buying a laundry list of grocery items to make new recipes, and giving up pizza and ice cream is no fun. It’s a lot of work and let’s be honest, quitting and returning to what is comfortable feels good, because that is what we know. The trick is to decide between what is comfortable now and what we really, truly want.
Life is all about choices. Standing still, moving forward or creating change is a choice. It takes time to see improvements. It takes patience to get up and walk down that road every day, but you know what? It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being persistent. It’s about making a commitment to yourself and following through. That in itself will help you to reap huge gains in how you feel about yourself.
So how do we initiate new habits? First identify what you want to do. Second, start with small changes. Commit to working out 20 minutes 3-4 days/wk. Eat a salad and drink more water every day. You can always do more, but decide on something that is specific and achievable. Hold yourself accountable by getting a workout buddy, making a chart to track your progress or download an app to track activity, calories and/or food intake. The goal is to start. If you fall off the wagon, get back on. Don’t beat yourself up for having a bad day and don’t quit. Just keep going. We are all working to make positive changes. I am already proud of you for beginning your journey- New year, new you.
